The BIS CRS registration process can be broadly divided into the following steps.
If a foreign manufacturer has no liaison office in India, the process begins with nominating an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) — this can be the manufacturer's Indian subsidiary, trader, or importer. Domestic manufacturers may act as their own AIR.
After the AIR nomination, the manufacturer registers with the department and completes the KTMP process on the BIS portal.
Once the portal registration is approved, product testing is carried out and the application for certification is submitted along with the required documents.

If there are no discrepancies, BIS issues the final licence along with a unique 8-digit R number to the applicant.
